Memorable Information & Character Lookup

What is Memorable Information?

Many banks and online services protect your account with a memorable word (also called a memorable phrase, security word, or passphrase) in addition to your password. Instead of asking for the whole word, they ask for specific characters from it — for example "enter the 1st, 5th and 8th character of your memorable information". This makes it harder for anyone watching to capture the full secret.

The Memorable Information field lets you store that memorable word alongside each saved entry, so you always have it to hand when a login challenge asks for it.

The Character Lookup Tool

When an entry has Memorable Information saved, a Character Lookup button appears next to it. Clicking it opens a small helper that instantly tells you which character sits at any position — so you never have to count letters by hand.

  1. Open an entry that has Memorable Information saved
  2. Click the Character Lookup button beside the Memorable Information label
  3. Type the position numbers the login screen is asking for into the three boxes
  4. The character at each position is revealed instantly below each box, in uppercase
  5. The result updates live as you change the numbers

Worked Example

If your Memorable Information is AbcdeFg13454, the positions map like this:

  • Position 1A
  • Position 2B (letters are always shown in uppercase)
  • Position 81 (numbers are shown as-is)

Good to Know

  • Only letters and numbers are counted. Spaces, punctuation and symbols are ignored when working out positions.
  • Letters are always displayed in uppercase for easy reading, even if you saved them in lower case.
  • Positions start at 1 and go up to the number of letters and numbers in the word. Out-of-range values are clamped automatically.
  • The lookup happens entirely in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere.

Backup & Export

Critical: Regular Backups Required

Since data is stored locally, browser data clearing, crashes, or device loss will result in permanent data loss. Export your passwords regularly to prevent losing access to your accounts.

How to Export Your Passwords

  1. Click the "Export" button in the main interface
  2. A JSON file will be downloaded with all your password data
  3. Store this file in a secure location (encrypted drive, secure cloud storage)
  4. Consider creating multiple backups in different locations

How to Import Your Passwords

  1. Click the "Import" button in the main interface
  2. Select your previously exported JSON file
  3. Confirm the import (this will replace all current data)
  4. Your passwords will be restored

Backup Best Practices

  • Export your passwords at least once a week
  • Store backups in encrypted folders or secure cloud storage
  • Test your backups by importing them occasionally
  • Keep multiple backup copies in different locations
  • Never store backup files in plain text on public computers

Troubleshooting

Common Issues

My passwords disappeared

This usually happens when browser data is cleared. Check if you have a recent backup file to import. Consider enabling browser data retention or using a different browser profile for password management.

Import/Export not working

Ensure you're using a modern browser with JavaScript enabled. Check that the JSON file is valid and hasn't been corrupted. Try refreshing the page and attempting the operation again.

Copy to clipboard not working

This feature requires HTTPS or localhost. Some browsers may block clipboard access. Try using a different browser or ensure you're using the tool on a secure connection.

Performance issues with many passwords

The tool is optimized for personal use (hundreds of passwords). For large datasets, consider organizing with categories and using search filters to improve performance.

Filter preferences not being remembered

If your category and favorites filter settings aren't being saved, check if your browser allows localStorage. Some privacy modes or browser extensions may block localStorage functionality. Try disabling private browsing mode.
