About Wire Gauges
American Wire Gauge (AWG) is a standardized wire gauge system used in North America to denote the cross-sectional area of electrical wire.
Key Points:
- Smaller AWG numbers = larger wire diameter
- Each 3 AWG reduction doubles the cross-sectional area
- 4/0 (0000) is the largest standard size
- 40 AWG is among the smallest standard sizes
Common Applications
Usage Tips
• Enter any known value to find the nearest standard AWG
• Current ratings are for copper wire in free air at 30°C
• Use larger gauges for longer runs to reduce voltage drop
• Click on the visual gauge or chart rows for quick selection
• All conversions find the closest standard AWG size

Quick Reference
Common Uses:
12-14 Household wiring
16-18 Appliance cords
20-24 Electronics
Remember:
• Lower AWG = Thicker wire
• Higher current capacity with thicker wire
• 4/0 is thickest standard size
