About Fence Material Calculator

Use this calculator for a quick fence takeoff. It estimates posts, rails, pickets, and concrete for common wood fence builds.

It is best for planning and ordering, not for engineering approval. Corner posts, gates, slopes, and local code may change the final list.

FAQ

How many fence posts do I need?

Divide the fence run by post spacing, round up to whole sections, then add one end post. Corner posts and gate posts may add more.

What post spacing should I use?

Most wood fences use 6 to 8 feet between posts. Heavier or windy sites may need closer spacing.

How much concrete per post?

A round post hole estimate is volume = π × radius² × depth. Use the bag count shown here as a practical buy list, then round up for safety.

What is the difference between picket and privacy fence?

Picket fences usually use narrower boards with gaps. Privacy fences typically use taller boards with little or no gap and often need more rails.
