About Roofing Material Calculator
Use this calculator for a fast roofing takeoff. It estimates area, shingles, underlayment, drip edge, and ridge cap for common roof shapes.
It is a planning tool, not a substitute for a full roof diagram. Valleys, dormers, hips, and starter strips may change the final order.
FAQ
How many roofing squares do I need?
One roofing square equals 100 square feet. This calculator adds pitch and waste before converting area into squares and bundles.
Why does pitch matter?
Steeper roofs have more surface area than the flat footprint. Pitch increases the material estimate so you do not under-order.
What is a bundle?
Asphalt shingles are usually sold in bundles. Most standard shingles take 3 bundles per square, but always check the packaging.
Do I need extra for valleys and hips?
Yes. Valleys, hips, cuts, and starter strips can increase waste, so use a higher waste percentage if the roof is complex.
