About Camping Packing Checklist
The Camping Packing Checklist is a browser-based packing list built specifically for life under canvas. General travel lists assume a hotel; camping doesn't. You're carrying your own shelter, bed, kitchen and light source, and forgetting any one of them can quietly ruin a trip — there's no front desk for spare tent pegs at 9pm in a field. This checklist starts you off with the gear most campers need, grouped into eight practical areas: Shelter, Sleeping, Cooking & Food, Lighting & Power, Clothing & Weather, Health & Toiletries, Campsite Gear & Tools, and Essentials & Admin.
Its standout feature is the essentials alert. The truly trip-critical items — tent, pegs, sleeping bag, stove, fuel, head torch, waterproofs, first aid kit and more — are starred, and any starred item you haven't packed yet is collected into a single highlighted panel at the top of the page. You can star or un-star anything to match your own definition of "can't leave without it". Set the number of nights and campers to keep the trip in view, tick items off as they go in the car, and watch the packing progress bar fill. Everything saves automatically to your browser's local storage — no account, nothing sent to a server — and you can print a tidy PDF or export a backup. Reusing the list next time is one tap on "Untick all". For trips abroad, pair it with the Travel Document Checklist and the Travel Vaccination Checklist.
How to Use Camping Packing Checklist
- Name your trip and set the departure date, number of nights, and how many campers you're packing for — the header keeps these in view and counts down the days.
- Work through each category. Remove anything that doesn't apply with the trash icon, and add your own gear in the "Add an item" field — press Enter or tap the + button.
- Star the items you consider essential (many are pre-starred). Tap the star on any item to add or remove it from the essentials list.
- As you load each item into the car or pack, tick its checkbox. The progress bar and per-category counts update instantly.
- Keep an eye on the amber "Essentials still to pack" panel — it only clears when every starred item is ticked, so use it as your final pre-departure gate.
- Use "Download PDF" for a printable copy to tick off by hand, or Export to back up and move your list to another device.
- Back home, tap "Untick all" to reset every checkbox while keeping your customised list ready for the next trip.
Tip: pack and tick the shelter and sleeping categories first. A tent with all its pegs and a warm, dry place to sleep are what make or break a camping trip — get those in the car before anything else.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the star (essential) do?
Starring an item marks it as trip-critical. Every starred item you haven't ticked yet appears in the amber "Essentials still to pack" panel at the top, so the must-haves can't get lost among the nice-to-haves. The key gear is pre-starred, but you can star or un-star anything to suit your trip.
Is my data private?
Yes. Your packing list, ticks, and trip details are stored only in your browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is uploaded to any server and there's no account. Clearing your browser data removes the saved list, so keep a JSON export if it matters.
Can I reuse the list for my next trip?
Absolutely — that's the easiest way to use it. Tap "Untick all" when you get home to clear every checkbox while keeping all your customised items and stars. Your list is then ready to go for the next trip.
Does it adjust quantities for nights and campers?
The nights and campers fields are there to keep the scale of the trip in mind as you pack — they're shown in the header but don't automatically multiply items. Use them as a prompt: more nights means more food, fuel and clean clothes; more campers means more chairs, bedding and plates.
How is this different from a general travel packing list?
A camping trip means bringing your own shelter, bed, kitchen and lighting rather than relying on a hotel. This list focuses on exactly that gear — tents and pegs, sleeping bags and mats, stoves and fuel, head torches and lanterns, plus weather clothing and campsite tools — which a typical holiday packing list skips entirely.
Can I add my own categories or items?
You can add and remove items in any category using the field at the bottom of each card and the trash icon on each item. Categories themselves are fixed in this tool, but the eight areas cover most camping needs — add specialised gear (climbing, fishing, kids' kit) as items in the closest matching category.
Can I print it or save a PDF?
Yes. Click "Download PDF" for a clean, two-column printable version with tick boxes and stars on the essentials. In the print dialog choose your printer for paper, or "Save as PDF" to keep a digital copy on your phone for the campsite.
Does it work offline?
Once the page has loaded, your list lives in local storage and works offline — handy at a campsite with no signal. Open it on the same device where you saved it; your data only moves between devices if you Export and Import it.
