About Household Maintenance Checklist
The Household Maintenance Checklist is a recurring-task planner that keeps your home in good shape without you having to remember every interval. Unlike a one-off to-do list, it understands that home upkeep repeats: a furnace filter needs changing every few months, a boiler wants a yearly service, gutters fill up twice a year, and smoke alarms should be tested monthly. You set how often each task should happen and log the date you last did it; the tool works out when each one is next due.
Tasks are grouped into seven practical areas — Safety, Heating & HVAC, Plumbing, Exterior & Roof, Appliances, Seasonal, and General & Interior — each pre-filled with the jobs most homes need, and you can rename, delete, or add your own categories to match your home. A status dashboard counts what's overdue, due soon, up to date, or not yet logged, and an alert panel lists anything overdue so nothing slips. Everything saves automatically to your browser's local storage: no account, no sign-up, nothing sent to a server. Prefer pen and paper? Hit "Download PDF" for a printable copy with tick boxes and date lines. Use Export to back it up, and pair it with the Home Inventory Checklist to keep your whole home documented.
How to Use Household Maintenance Checklist
- Name your home if you keep schedules for more than one property, so exports are easy to tell apart.
- Go through each area and remove any task that doesn't apply to your home with the trash icon, then add your own in the "Add a task" field — press Enter or tap the + button.
- Make the areas your own: click a category's title to rename it, use the trash icon in its header to delete one, or tap "Add category" to create new areas like a workshop, garden, or rental unit.
- For every task, set how often it should happen using the frequency dropdown (monthly through every two years).
- Set the last-done date for tasks you've already completed. The tool immediately calculates the next due date and shows a status badge.
- When you finish a task, click its "Done" button — this stamps today's date and rolls the next due date forward by the chosen interval automatically.
- Check the dashboard and the overdue panel at the top whenever you visit. Tackle anything red first, then "due soon".
- Export a JSON backup now and then, and Import it to move your schedule to another device.
Tip: do a quick five-minute review on the first weekend of each month. Clearing one or two due tasks regularly is far easier than facing a backlog of neglected maintenance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the "next due" date work?
Each task has a frequency and a last-done date. The next due date is simply the last-done date plus the interval — so a quarterly task done on 1 March is next due on 1 June. Pressing "Done" sets the last-done date to today and the cycle restarts from there.
Is my data private?
Yes. Your schedule, dates, and custom tasks are stored only in your browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is uploaded to any server and there's no account. Clearing your browser data removes it, so keep a JSON export if it matters.
Does it send reminders or notifications?
No — it doesn't push notifications or emails. It's a visual planner: open the page and the dashboard and overdue panel show what needs attention. Many people bookmark it and check it on a set day each month.
Can I print a paper copy or save a PDF?
Yes. Click "Download PDF" to open a clean, printable version with every task, its frequency, the last-done date, and an empty box and date line to fill in by hand. In the print dialog choose your printer for a paper copy, or "Save as PDF" to keep a digital one — handy for sticking on the fridge or in a utility cupboard.
Are the default intervals official requirements?
No, they're sensible general guidelines. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific boiler, alarms, HVAC system, or appliances, and any local regulations — for example, gas appliances often have legal annual-service requirements for landlords. Adjust each frequency to suit your home.
Can I add or remove tasks?
Absolutely. Remove anything that doesn't apply with the trash icon, and add your own tasks in any area using the field at the bottom of each card. New tasks default to a yearly frequency, which you can change.
Can I add, rename, or delete categories?
Yes. Click any category's title to rename it. Use the trash icon in a category's header to delete the whole category and its tasks, and the "Add category" button below the grid to create your own — for example a workshop, garden, pool, or rental unit. Your custom categories are saved along with everything else.
What does "Not logged" mean?
It means you haven't recorded a last-done date for that task yet, so the tool can't calculate when it's next due. Set a date or press "Done" once and it will start tracking the cycle.
Can I keep schedules for more than one home?
Yes. Set up one home, click Export to save it as a JSON file named after the property, then Reset and build the next. Use Import to reload whichever schedule you need.
