Digital Security Best Practices

These 6 tips will help make your digital life more secure.

  • Use a Password Manager: Don't try to remember dozens of complex passwords. A reputable password manager can generate, store, and fill them in for you securely.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Whenever possible, enable 2FA. This adds a crucial second layer of security, requiring a code from your phone or another device to log in.
  • One Site, One Password: Never reuse passwords across different websites. If one site is breached, attackers won't be able to access your other accounts.
  • Beware of Phishing: Be skeptical of unsolicited emails or messages asking for your credentials. Always verify the sender and go directly to the official website instead of clicking suspicious links.
  • Keep Everything Updated: Regularly update your operating system, web browser, and other software. Updates often contain critical security patches that protect you from the latest threats.
  • Favor Passphrases Over Passwords: A long passphrase made of multiple random words (like blue-ocean-waves-crashing) is often stronger and easier to remember than a short, complex password.

Which of the following is an example of a strong password?

A strong password is long and complex, making it difficult for attackers to guess. Key characteristics include:

  • Length: At least 12 characters, but longer is better. Our "Super Strong Password" generator creates passwords of 26 characters or more.
  • Complexity: A mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols (e.g., !@#$%).
  • Unpredictability: Avoids common words, phrases, or personal information (like birthdays or names).

An example of a strong password from our generator might look like this: Tr0u&badour!7#

What is the difference between a Passphrase and a Password?

The main difference lies in their structure and how they are remembered.

  • Passwords are typically shorter strings of characters, often requiring a complex mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Their security comes from this complexity, but it can make them hard to remember.
  • Passphrases consist of a sequence of words, like a short sentence. They are easier to remember than complex passwords. Their security comes from their length; a four or five-word passphrase can be even more secure than a short, complex password.

How to create a strong passphrase?

A strong passphrase is both memorable and secure. Here are some tips for creating one:

  • Use Multiple Words: Aim for at least four random, unrelated words. The more words, the stronger the passphrase.
  • Add Separators: Use spaces, hyphens, or other symbols between words to increase complexity.
  • Mix Cases: Capitalize some words or letters randomly.

Examples of strong passphrases:

  • Correct-Horse-Battery-Staple
  • tree car river house
  • Singing#Mountain!Whisper2
  • Vivid!Jungle$Parrot9
  • blue ocean waves crashing
  • Quantum-Leap_Cosmic-Drift
  • silentForestWalkingStick
  • Mountain^Echoes&River*Flows
  • four-sleepy-cats-knitting

What is a PIN code?

A PIN (Personal Identification Number) is a short, numeric code used to verify your identity. Unlike passwords, PINs only contain numbers (0-9). They are commonly used for quick access to devices like phones, for ATM transactions, and other services where fast authentication is needed. While convenient, their short length and limited character set make them less secure than a strong password or passphrase.
