Microphone Test Information
How does the microphone test work?
The microphone test uses the Web Audio API to capture audio from your microphone and analyze the volume levels in real-time. The volume meter visualizes the audio input strength, allowing you to verify your microphone is working and picking up sound properly.
Why is the volume meter not moving when I speak?
If the volume meter stays at zero, check that your microphone is properly connected, not muted in system settings, selected as the default input device, and that you've granted browser permissions. Try speaking louder or adjusting your microphone position closer to your mouth.
Is my audio being recorded or transmitted?
No, absolutely not. Your microphone audio is processed entirely within your browser using the Web Audio API. No audio data is recorded, stored, or transmitted to any server. The test only analyzes volume levels locally to display the meter visualization.
Why do I need to grant microphone permission?
Browsers require explicit user permission to access microphones for security and privacy protection. This prevents websites from accessing your microphone without your knowledge. You must grant permission for the test to access your microphone's audio input.
Can I test multiple microphones?
This tool uses your browser's default microphone. To test different microphones, change your system's default audio input device in your operating system settings before starting the test, or check your browser's site permissions to select a specific microphone.
What if my microphone is already in use?
If you see a "NotReadableError" or message that your microphone is in use, close other applications that might be using it (Zoom, Skype, Discord, recording software). Only one application can access your microphone at a time on most systems.
Pro Tips
- • Test your microphone before important calls or recordings to avoid technical issues.
- • Position your microphone 6-12 inches from your mouth for optimal sound quality.
- • Reduce background noise by testing in a quiet environment for accurate results.
- • Check system audio settings to ensure your desired microphone is set as the default input.
- • If the volume is too low, increase microphone boost or gain in your system settings.
- • Use a pop filter or windscreen to reduce plosive sounds and improve audio quality.
