Webcam Tester Information
How does the webcam tester work?
The webcam tester uses your browser's MediaDevices API to access your camera. When you click "Start Camera", it requests permission to use your webcam and displays the live video feed so you can verify it's working properly.
Why is my browser asking for camera permission?
Browsers require explicit user permission to access cameras and microphones for security and privacy reasons. You must allow access for the webcam tester to work. Your video feed is only displayed locally in your browser and is never recorded or transmitted.
What if my camera doesn't work or shows a black screen?
Check that your camera is properly connected, not being used by another application, and that you've granted browser permissions. Try closing other apps that might be using the camera, refreshing the page, or restarting your browser.
Is my video being recorded or sent anywhere?
No, your webcam feed is displayed only in your browser and is never recorded, stored, or transmitted to any server. The video processing happens entirely on your device, ensuring complete privacy.
Why doesn't this work on HTTP connections?
Modern browsers require HTTPS (secure connection) or localhost to access cameras and microphones. This security measure protects users from malicious websites accessing their devices without proper encryption.
Can I use this to test my microphone?
This tool currently focuses on video testing. While it requests both camera and microphone permissions (required by some browsers), it doesn't display audio levels. You can verify the microphone permission is granted, but audio output isn't shown.
Pro Tips
- • Test your webcam before important video calls to avoid technical issues during meetings.
- • Check your camera positioning and lighting to ensure you're clearly visible on video calls.
- • If multiple cameras are available, your browser typically uses the default camera device.
- • Close other applications using the camera (like Zoom, Skype) before testing to avoid conflicts.
- • Use HTTPS or localhost URLs for webcam testing - HTTP connections won't work on modern browsers.
- • Grant camera permissions carefully and only to trusted websites for your privacy and security.
