About the Bill Split Calculator

The Bill Split Calculator is a free, fast way to divide a restaurant bill among friends, family, or coworkers. Whether you want to split a check evenly or charge each person only for what they ordered, this tool handles tax and tip automatically and gives you the exact amount each person owes — down to the cent.

Two modes are built in. Equal split divides the entire bill, including tax and tip, evenly across the group — perfect when everyone shared similarly. Custom split calculates per-item shares: each person pays for the items they ordered, plus a proportional share of tax and tip. This is the fairest method when one person ordered the steak and another had a salad.

The calculator supports tax-inclusive prices common outside the United States, multiple currencies, common tip presets (15%, 18%, 20%, 25%), and an optional round-up that ensures the group always collects enough to cover the bill — handy for paying in cash.

How to Use the Bill Split Calculator

1. Choose a mode

Pick Equal split for an even share, or Custom split to charge each person for their own items.

2. Enter the bill

Type the bill total in equal mode, or enter each person's item prices in custom mode. Use commas or new lines to list multiple items.

3. Set tax & tip

Adjust the tax rate to match your region. Pick a tip preset or use the slider for a custom percentage. Tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal.

4. Read the result

The header shows the per-person total and the group total. Enable round-up to ensure the full bill is always covered when paying in cash.

Bill Split Calculator FAQ

How is the bill split between people?

In Equal Split mode, the total bill including tax and tip is divided evenly by the number of people. In Custom Split mode, each person pays for the items they ordered, plus their share of tax (proportional) and tip (calculated on their pre-tax subtotal). This is the fairest method when people order items at very different price points.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Tipping etiquette varies, but most servers and tipping guides recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal. This calculator does that automatically so the tip reflects the cost of the food and service, not the local sales tax. If you prefer to tip on the post-tax total, simply add the tax rate to your tip percentage.

My country includes tax in the menu price. What do I do?

Switch the Tax handling toggle to "Tax already included." The calculator will back out the tax from the total to compute the correct tip and per-person split. This is useful for the UK, most of the EU, Australia, and Japan, where prices are typically tax-inclusive.

What does "Round up to the nearest cent" do?

It rounds each person's share up to the next cent so the group always collects at least the bill total. The result page also shows how much extra is collected — usually a few cents — which is handy for ensuring the bill is fully covered when paying in cash.

How do I enter multiple items for one person?

In Custom Split mode, type item prices separated by commas, semicolons, or new lines. For example: "12.50, 4.75, 8.00" charges that person for three items totaling $25.25. You do not need to add tax or tip — the calculator handles those automatically.

What is a fair tip percentage?

In the United States, 18%–22% is the standard tip for sit-down restaurant service, with 15% considered the lower bound for adequate service and 25% reserved for exceptional service. For takeout and counter service, 10%–15% is appropriate. Outside the US, tipping norms vary widely — many countries include service in the bill or do not expect a tip at all.

Pro Tips

  • • Use Custom Split when one person ordered the steak and another had a salad — it avoids the awkward "let's just split it" math.
  • • Always tip on the pre-tax total to avoid tipping on the government's portion of the bill.
  • • When paying in cash, enable Round Up so the group always covers the bill.
  • • Save a screenshot of the breakdown to share in your group chat — easier than reading numbers aloud.
