About the Running Pace Calculator

The running pace calculator lets you find any one of three training variables — pace, finish time, or distance — when you know the other two. Whether you're planning your first 5K or targeting a marathon PR, it instantly converts between pace per km and pace per mile and shows projected split times at key checkpoints.

  • Calculate pace per km and pace per mile simultaneously
  • Preset race distances: marathon, half-marathon, 10K, and 5K
  • Custom distances in miles, kilometers, meters, or yards
  • Split time table for 1 km, 5 km, 10 km, half, and full marathon checkpoints
  • Speed readout in both km/h and mph
  • All calculations run in your browser — no data is ever sent to a server

How to Use the Running Pace Calculator

  1. 1

Choose what you want to calculate

Select the Pace, Finish Time, or Distance tab at the top of the calculator.

  2. 2

    Enter your distance

Type a number and pick a unit, or choose a race preset (Marathon, Half-Marathon, 10K, 5K) from the dropdown — no number entry needed for presets.

  3. 3

    Fill in the remaining field

Enter your time (hours, minutes, seconds) or your pace (min:sec per km or per mile), depending on which tab you chose.

  4. 4

    Click the Calculate button

Results appear instantly: pace in both km and mile format, finish time, speed, distance, and a split time table.

  5. 5

    Expand Split Times

Click Split Times in the results card to see your projected time at each key distance checkpoint — useful for pacing strategy on race day.

Tip: Use the Finish Time tab to reverse-engineer what pace you need to hit your goal time — enter your target race distance and desired finish time to get your required pace per km and per mile.

Common Use Cases

Race Day Pacing

  • • Find the exact pace needed to finish a marathon sub-4 hours
  • • Check if your target 5K time requires a comfortable or aggressive pace
  • • Print split times for each km to wear on your wrist

Training Plan Setup

  • • Calculate easy run pace (typically 60–90 sec/km slower than race pace)
  • • Set tempo and interval paces based on a target race goal
  • • Convert coach's pace in min/mi to min/km for your GPS watch

Treadmill & Track Workouts

  • • Convert km/h treadmill speed to min/km pace
  • • Find distance covered from a timed track session
  • • Calculate lap splits for 400 m repeat workouts

Post-Run Analysis

  • • Verify your average pace from a GPS watch readout
  • • Cross-check pace per mile vs. pace per km displayed by your app
  • • Estimate how a quicker pace would change your weekly volume

Beginner Runners

  • • Understand what a 6:00 min/km pace actually feels like to run
  • • Plan a realistic first 5K finish time
  • • Convert between imperial and metric units when following online plans

Coaches & Running Groups

  • • Generate split sheets for athletes with different goal times
  • • Set group workout paces based on a shared race goal
  • • Quickly confirm whether a reported time matches the stated pace

Frequently Asked Questions

What is running pace and how is it calculated?

Running pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance — most commonly minutes per kilometer (min/km) or minutes per mile (min/mi). It is calculated by dividing your total run time by the total distance: Pace = Time ÷ Distance.

How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?

Multiply your min/km pace by 1.60934. For example, a 5:00 min/km pace equals 5 × 1.60934 ≈ 8:03 min/mile. This calculator shows both automatically in the results.

What pace do I need to run a sub-4-hour marathon?

A 4:00:00 marathon requires an average pace of 5:41 min/km (or 9:09 min/mile). Use the Pace tab, select Marathon as the distance, and enter 4:00:00 as your time to verify.

What pace do I need to run a 25-minute 5K?

A 25:00 5K requires a pace of 5:00 min/km (8:03 min/mile). Select the 5K preset, enter 25:00 as your time, and click Calculate Pace.

Can I calculate distance from pace and time?

Yes. Switch to the Distance tab, enter your time and pace, and the calculator will tell you exactly how far you ran or will run.

Does this calculator support yards and meters?

Yes. The distance dropdown includes miles, kilometers, meters, and yards alongside the four standard race presets. All units are converted to km internally before computing pace and time.

Is my data safe? Does this tool send data to a server?

No data leaves your browser. All calculations happen entirely client-side in JavaScript. Nothing you enter is uploaded or stored anywhere.

How accurate are the split time predictions?

Split times assume an even pace throughout the race. Real-world performance varies with terrain, elevation, and fatigue. Use the splits as a guide for even-effort pacing rather than a guaranteed prediction.
